The Coven Academy season 1 finale leaves several doors open, and creator Tim Federle has started explaining where they could lead. In an interview with TVLine, Federle discussed the cliffhangers in the supernatural drama, which is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. No second season has been announced.

Coven Academy Season 1 Finale: The Kiss That Does Not Happen

One of the finale’s biggest moments is a kiss that never arrives. Briar (Malina Weissman) and Jake (Malachi Barton) nearly kiss but stop short. Federle told TVLine that “you don’t get a second chance at a first kiss.” He said he did not want the moment to feel like a rebound after Ollie leaves town.

Where Jake Goes From Here

Jake renounces dark magic after helping Briar defeat the warlock William. Federle said Jake has felt its power, though, and he expects the character to keep it “in his back pocket” for future stories.

Other Cliffhangers Facing the Coven

The biggest reveal of the Coven Academy season 1 finale is that headmaster Miss Graves (Tiffani Thiessen) is Briar’s biological mother. Federle said he withheld that script page from Thiessen and Weissman during production to keep the twist secret. He added that Miss Graves has “noble intentions.”

Other threads stay open across the ensemble:

  • Ollie (Louis Thresher), Briar’s vampire love interest, leaves town to sort out personal matters.
  • Sasha (Jordan Leftwich) learns that her brother Mason, presumed dead, is a vampire.
  • Tegan (Ora Duplass) finds out that McKenna (Swayam Bhatia) was bitten by a werewolf.

William was defeated in the finale, but Federle indicated that genre conventions mean a villain is rarely gone for good. He also said William would not be the main antagonist of a second season.

What to Know About Coven Academy

Coven Academy is a supernatural teen drama created by Federle, who also wrote and directed the pilot. It follows young witches-in-training protecting their city, New Orleans, from supernatural threats. The series premiered Oct. 1 on Freeform, and the full first season began streaming Oct. 2 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Each of the finale’s reveals gives the writers a ready-made story if more episodes are ordered. Disney is also reshaping its catalog elsewhere, as its licensing deal sending Ice Age and Will Trent to Netflix shows. Hulu viewers can look to the Thornbird TV adaptation for another supernatural-tinged series.
