Jak and Daxter Movie Refuses to Die Quietly

Jak and Daxter is supposedly still getting a movie, which is a sentence I keep having to type in 2026. Is this real life, or did I eat some expired gas station sushi and hallucinate the last four years? The whole thing feels like a fever dream where someone fell asleep watching a Naughty Dog documentary and woke up during a Minecraft commercial.

Writers From Blocky Game Still Attached

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Neil Widener and Gavin James are attached to write the Jak and Daxter screenplay. These are the same guys who wrote “A Minecraft Movie,” which is a film that exists and made almost a billion dollars. Ruben Fleischer is still attached to direct, the same guy who did “Uncharted” and “Zombieland.” He’s been circling this since 2022 when he first mentioned working on another Naughty Dog adaptation.

Remember When This Got Announced Years Ago

Fleischer dropped the original news in February 2022 during “Uncharted” press. Then in 2023, insider MyTimeToShineHello claimed Tom Holland would play Jak, and Chris Pratt would voice Daxter. That casting rumor is so cursed it should come with a therapist. Chris Pratt voicing an orange weasel-otter hybrid is not a mental image I needed today, tomorrow, or ever.

Tom Holland Fatigue Is Real And Painful

Let me establish my bias clearly: Tom Holland needs to stop being in everything. The man has been Spider-Man, Nathan Drake, and now possibly Jak. What’s next, a live-action adaptation of the Pringles mascot? He’s talented, sure. But Hollywood has other young white dudes with floppy hair. Dozens of them. Hundreds. They’re everywhere. Pick one.

The Minecraft Connection Makes Zero Sense

Hiring the writers of “A Minecraft Movie” to adapt Jak and Daxter is like hiring a plumber to do your taxes. The skills do not transfer. Minecraft has no plot. Jak and Daxter has lore about eco, precursor technology, and a dude who gets dunked in dark sludge and becomes a fuzzy rage monster. These are not similar things. This is not a natural fit. The logic is absent.

The Format Question Nobody Can Answer

The 2023 rumor claimed this would be live action, but that was never confirmed by Sony. Fleischer’s own comments from 2022 actually described Jak and Daxter as taking place in “a different world” with “very different characters than our human form” . That could mean anything. Nobody actually knows if this thing will be live action, animated, or some cursed hybrid. The rumor mill just keeps saying “live action” because it sounds more exciting.

Jak and Daxter Remaster Pitch Meets Cruel Fate

While Sony fiddles with a movie nobody asked for, the actual games collect dust. An animator named Travis Howe revealed in March 2026 that Sanzaru Games pitched a remaster to Sony back in 2019, creating a shot-for-shot animated sequence of the opening cutscene to demonstrate what it would look like.

Howe was explicit: this was NOT commissioned by Sony; it was a fan pitch to gain permission. Sony passed. Then Meta shut down Sanzaru in January 2026 along with Twisted Pixel and Armature. So not only did Sony reject the remaster, the studio that pitched it no longer exists. The timeline is genuinely cursed.

Fans Want Games, Not Film Adaptations

The reaction online has been predictable and depressing. Fans are begging for a new game or at least a remaster instead of a film. One fan on X wrote they really hope this movie leads to a new game, and also expressed confusion about the Tom Holland and Chris Pratt casting rumor. That’s the whole vibe. Confusion and desperate hope. Howe himself said if fans want a remaster, they need to speak up and make their voices heard.

Sony Hasn’t Actually Confirmed Anything

None of this is official. Sony has not announced a Jak and Daxter movie. No release date exists. No cast has been signed. The IMDb page lists the writers, but IMDb pages have been wrong before. This whole thing rests on the word of an insider who has been right before but is still just a guy on the internet. Treat it accordingly.

My Grandmother Could Write This Script

The bar for video game movies is so low that anyone could probably clear it. The Minecraft movie made money. Uncharted made money. Sonic made money. These things are not art. They are content. They are products. Jak and Daxter deserve better than being a product, but here we are.

If this thing actually gets made, I will watch it. I will complain about it. And I will probably enjoy hating it. That’s the deal we make as gamers. We show up even when we know we shouldn’t. The Jak and Daxter movie is still in development. Or it isn’t. Nobody knows anything. That’s the news.
