Digger box office: 3 shocking signs of a disappointing debut

Digger box office results include an $8 million domestic debut. Reported costs and divided audiences put Tom Cruise’s satire under pressure.

The Digger box office opening fell short of expectations, with Tom Cruise’s satire earning about $8 million domestically in its first weekend. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film opened Oct. 2, but its star’s presence did not deliver a blockbuster audience.

3 pressures behind the Digger box office opening

A small opening against substantial costs

The Hollywood Reporter’s Oct. 5 analysis puts the international opening at $12 million from 73 markets. It reports an initial production budget of $125 million and says Warner Bros. disputed a higher estimate approaching $180 million. Those figures should not be treated as a single confirmed budget.

Collider’s earlier weekend report described the worldwide opening as less than $20 million. The outlets’ approximate totals reflect their respective reporting dates.

Audiences did not embrace the satire

Collider reported a C+ CinemaScore and compared the domestic debut with the $6.7 million opening of “Lions for Lambs” in 2007. “Rock of Ages” began with $12 million, making this opening weaker than another conspicuous Cruise disappointment.

The film casts Cruise as an oil magnate whose actions trigger a global catastrophe. Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons also appear. Its premise offers a different experience from the action films associated with Cruise’s recent career.

The campaign faced divided reactions

THR reported that interest weakened before release and the advertising began highlighting the film’s divisive reception. Analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the outlet that Cruise’s involvement alone could not make every project a mainstream blockbuster.

The opening establishes a difficult start, not a final lifetime gross. For context, read our pre-release box-office forecast and report on the film’s original title.
