Verity box office: $62.6M delivers a powerful win

Verity opened to $62.5 million worldwide, marking the second-best global debut for a Colleen Hoover adaptation and Amazon MGM's strongest theatrical win.

The Verity box office launch put Amazon MGM Studios atop the North American chart for Oct. 2-4. The thriller earned an estimated $32.6 million domestically and $30 million internationally, for a $62.6 million worldwide debut, according to Boxoffice Pro’s weekend report.

Verity box office leads the weekend

The domestic result came from 3,510 locations. It followed the film’s $4.5 million preview haul, which was included in the weekend total. Overseas, the film opened across 70 markets and took first place in 30 of them.

Boxoffice Pro reported $4.5 million from the United Kingdom, $3.8 million from Germany, $3.5 million from Brazil and $3.1 million from Australia. Those are opening estimates, rather than final lifetime totals.

A Hoover adaptation with a different premise

Michael Showalter directs the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel. Dakota Johnson plays a writer brought in to finish a series by an author played by Anne Hathaway, according to The Associated Press.

The domestic debut exceeded those of the Hoover adaptations “Regretting You” and “Reminders of Him” but fell short of the $50 million opening for “It Ends With Us.” Our pre-release box office coverage tracked the race ahead of opening weekend.
