October 2026 brings six horror releases to theaters and streaming: Jessica Chastain's dual role in Other Mommy, Josh Hartnett's sea creature series, and more.

Horror movies in October 2026 bring giant creatures, familiar villains and a mother who may be something else entirely. Four theatrical releases and two streaming series make up this roundup, with Jessica Chastain and Josh Hartnett among the stars. Here is when to watch, plus a Utah festival for genre fans.

Horror movies and series: October streaming dates

1. “Carrie” — Oct. 7 on Prime Video

Mike Flanagan brings Stephen King’s 1974 novel to television in an eight-episode “Carrie” series. Summer H. Howell plays the bullied teenager whose telekinetic powers emerge as she enters high school. Samantha Sloyan plays her mother, Margaret. Matthew Lillard, Kate Siegel and Rahul Kohli also star. The story joins a long list of King adaptations.

2. “Below” — Oct. 8 on Netflix

Hartnett’s Calvin Penney faces a threat from the ocean while trying to protect his family in Newfoundland. Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton co-star in the six-episode series. Netflix’s cast and release guide details the mystery surrounding the creature.

3. “Beware Boiúna” — Oct. 2, Lionsgate

A giant snake stalks a medical mission in the Amazon in Mike P. Nelson’s latest thriller. The director of “Wrong Turn” and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” works with Jessica Rothe, Kiana Madeira and Logan Marshall-Green.

4. “Other Mommy” — Oct. 9, Universal Pictures

Chastain plays both Bela’s mother and the entity that resembles her. Jay Duplass plays the girl’s father, and Arabella Olivia Clark plays Bela. Rob Savage directs the adaptation of Josh Malerman’s “Incidents Around the House,” according to Universal’s announcement.

5. “Whalefall” — Oct. 16, 20th Century Studios

Austin Abrams plays a diver trapped inside a sperm whale with his oxygen running out. Brian Duffield directs, with Josh Brolin and Elisabeth Shue also in the cast. The studio’s film page confirms the release date.

6. “Clayface” — Oct. 23, Warner Bros. Pictures

James Watkins directs the Batman villain’s body-horror origin story, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie. Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini share screenplay credit. Flanagan has described his limited involvement after turning in his script.

FilmQuest in Utah

FilmQuest runs Oct. 22-31 in Provo, Utah. The announced lineup includes world premieres of “The Avalanche,” “The Relic: Dragon,” “Whiskey Throttle” and “The Crawling.”
