Marshals season 2 premiere explains Garrett’s death

The Marshals season 2 premiere reveals that Jeb started the barn fire killing Garrett. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut breaks down the mystery's resolution.

Marshals Season 2

The Marshals season 2 premiere solved one of last season’s biggest mysteries: Tom Weaver’s foreman Jeb started the barn fire that killed Garrett Garvey (Riley Green), a former Navy SEAL who appeared in four episodes of Season 1. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut says the reveal was intentional, tying Garrett’s death directly to the larger conflict driving the season.

“I wanted to connect everything back to Garrett, as well just to show how terrible these people are,” Hudnut tells TVLine. “Tom Weaver was really the show’s Big Bad, starting from Marshals Episode 4 last season; we’re uncovering that he actually did a lot of that stuff.”

How Marshals Solved Garrett’s Death

Many viewers suspected the Weavers were behind Garrett’s death, but the premiere confirmed it through a pivotal moment. When Kayce discovered that Jeb was trying to kill his son Tate, he killed Jeb with a rock and dumped his body in the river, unaware that the same man had also burned the barn that took Garrett’s life.

Garrett, a former Navy SEAL who served alongside Kayce and Cal, appeared in four episodes of Marshals Season 1. He healed old wounds between Kayce and Cal and showed Andrea how much fun she could have out west, even if only for one night. Green, already an established country music star, made his acting debut in the spin-off. He stepped into television coaching this fall as a new mentor on Season 30 of The Voice.

Kayce’s Haunting Path Forward

The kill was not about avenging Garrett, Kayce only learned afterward that Jeb had caused the fire, but Hudnut sees the moment as carrying weight beyond the immediate action. “That moment of Kayce coming across Jeb trying to kill his son, and then Kayce turning the tables on him, is a very powerful one,” Hudnut tells TVLine. “It’s a haunting image that’s going to stick with Kayce this season.”

The premiere also sets up larger questions about Tate’s future. The teenager is graduating from high school this season and turning 18, stepping into a world shaped by violence and loss. “By the end of the first episode, you really get that sense of Kayce’s concern, not only for all that Tate has endured, but also, this kid is graduating from high school this season, he’s turning 18, and he’s about to go out into the world,” Hudnut tells TVLine. “What kind of Dutton man is Kayce releasing into the world, and has he messed this kid up so much that Tate is going to follow in his footsteps?”
