More than 122,000 cases of Gatorade were recalled after the FDA found undeclared artificial dyes. PepsiCo initiated the recall Sept. 25, and the FDA classified it as a Class II recall Oct. 2.

What The Gatorade Recall Covers

The recall involves 122,021 cases of 28-ounce bottles in four flavors: Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero. The bottles contain undeclared Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6, artificial food dyes that must be declared on product labels.

Why It Matters

The FDA classifies this as a Class II recall, meaning use of or exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, though the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. Undeclared dyes pose a particular risk to consumers with sensitivities or allergies to these additives.

Which States Are Affected

The recalled bottles were distributed to 37 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

What To Do If You Have The Affected Product

Consumers who have purchased any of the four affected flavors should stop consuming them and check the lot number on the bottle. If your bottle matches one of the recalled lot numbers listed in the FDA’s enforcement report, do not drink it. PepsiCo and the FDA are available to answer questions about the recall or your purchase.
