Amazon has ordered an eight-episode drama series about Karen Read, with Elizabeth Banks starring and executive producing, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Justin Noble wrote the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
The Elizabeth Banks Karen Read series had been reported to be in development since 2025, Variety reported. It is based on “Karen,” the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast, and comes from a group of production companies that includes Warner Bros. Television, Brownstone Productions, David E. Kelley Productions, Audible, Law&Crime and Wondery.
What Amazon Announced About The Series
The project centers on a Boston police officer found dead in the snow during a blizzard, and the suspicion that falls on his girlfriend, Karen Read. According to the official synopsis, Read and her legal team maintain she is innocent and instead the victim of a conspiracy protecting the people actually responsible, a claim that the synopsis says divides the surrounding community.
The synopsis describes the project as a “genre-bending true crime series” that “explores society’s explosive obsession with true crime,” according to Variety.
Banks addressed the project in a statement, saying she grew up in Massachusetts and watched the case divide people around her. “We have spent years with this material because the questions it raises go far beyond one courtroom: why we choose the stories we believe, and what happens when trust in our institutions breaks down,” Banks said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She credited Noble with treating “the complexity of what happened and the public reaction to it” with care, and thanked Prime Video, Warner Bros.
Television, David E. Kelley Productions, Wondery and Law&Crime for backing the project “from the start.”
Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios, called the show a project about “what happens when truth becomes a matter of perspective and an entire community is forced to confront its own deepest divisions.” Friedlander said the combination of Noble’s writing and Banks’ presence would make for “a defining series that sparks conversation around the world.”
Marshall Lewy, head of Audible content for North America, said the underlying podcast “set the standard for telling this story” and called it “exactly the kind of IP that translates powerfully to television.”
What It Means For Fans Of The Case And The Podcast
Fans of the “Karen” podcast will see its reporting adapted into a scripted drama rather than another documentary retelling. The involvement of David E. Kelley Productions and Warner Bros. Television places the show alongside other high-profile legal dramas those companies have produced, though no cast beyond Banks or release window has been announced.
The series carries a notable caveat: it is unauthorized. Karen Read told WRKO host Howie Carr that she has nothing to do with the project and has not authorized it. Her attorney, Alan Jackson, said that Read’s story is “Karen Read’s story to tell.” Read is separately pursuing her own account of events through a deal with LBI Entertainment and a planned book.
Background On The Case And The Podcast
The series draws on “Karen,” the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast that chronicled the case before Amazon’s series order. The synopsis frames the case as one that has publicly split opinion over guilt and institutional trust, though the sources do not detail the specific legal proceedings, the identity of the police officer involved or the current status of any case.
What’s Next
Amazon has not announced a release date, additional cast or a production start date for the series. The show will stream on Prime Video once further details are confirmed.
