Wizards of the Coast announced Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, a new Universes Beyond set, during a panel at New York Comic Con in October 2026. The set releases April 8, 2027, making it the third Marvel-themed set in the card game.
Darkhold Destiny will be the second Magic: The Gathering set released in 2027, following Nauctis, according to IGN. Wizards of the Coast has released early details on the set’s story, card design and the characters players can expect to see.
Darkhold Destiny Release Date Announced
Darkhold Destiny is built around three types of magic within the game: Arcane magic tied to Doctor Strange and his allies, Divine magic connected to gods such as Thor, and Dark Magic associated with villains including Hela and Dormammu, according to IGN.
The set marks a shift in how Wizards of the Coast and Marvel have approached their collaborations. The first two Marvel sets focused on bringing popular characters into the game. Darkhold Destiny instead started with world-building, with designers constructing the setting first and then selecting characters who fit that world, IGN reported.
Marvel and Wizards of the Coast built a new Marvel narrative specifically for this set rather than adapting an existing comic storyline, according to IGN. Doctor Strange and Thor serve as the set’s main heroes, with Thor depicted as a god rather than as an Avenger.
Characters And Card Design
Darkhold Destiny includes Marvel characters alongside classic Magic creature types. Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and Blade appear with elves, dragons, angels and vampires, IGN reported.
The set’s centerpiece card is The Darkhold, a legendary artifact with a mana cost of three. Players can tap the artifact, place sin counters on it, and draw a card for each sin counter it holds, according to IGN.
Wizards of the Coast also revived the Arcane card subtype for Darkhold Destiny. The subtype had not appeared in the game since the Kamigawa block in the 2000s, IGN reported.
Marvel and Wizards of the Coast plan to support the set with new crossover comics distributed through Infinity Comics. The first issue arrives in February 2027, with a second issue releasing closer to the set’s April launch, according to IGN. Darkhold Destiny represents a different creative approach from previous Marvel sets: a world-first design process built on an original story rather than a character checklist.
Darkhold Destiny releases April 8, 2027. The first tie-in Infinity Comics issue arrives in February 2027.
