Taylor Swift surprised Dakota Johnson during her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 3, playing her “literal therapist” in a comedic bit that one Swiftie called a “Taylor Swift jump scare.” The appearance marked Swift’s first return to studio 8H in several years and featured a reference to her husband Travis Kelce with a Cleveland shout-out.

The moment came as Johnson joked about her recent dating life, mentioning two public breakups with musicians since she last hosted the show. After praising her supportive friends, Johnson introduced Swift as her therapist, prompting Swift to launch into a hilarious rebuttal.

“I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift said, according to Variety. “You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”

Swift continued with the bit, describing how Johnson would “flop on my couch and overshare and every so often I say ‘Damn, that’s crazy.'” When Johnson interjected with “Sleepover, yay!” Swift deadpanned: “Then I give you Pedialyte and my security drives you home.”

The exchange was a playful callback to their real-world friendship and Johnson’s appearance in Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, which premiered the same weekend.

Later in the monologue, Johnson wrapped up her dating-musician jokes by saying, “I think actually I’m doing a public service by dating them because, ladies, I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft. So you’re welcome, America. And also England.

And parts of Ireland. And Cleveland,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

And parts of Ireland.

The Cleveland mention was a nod to Swift’s song “Cleveland” from her newly expanded album “The Life of a Showgirl: Encore,” in which she sings about her husband Travis Kelce. Swift responded to the shout-out with a quick “Woo-woo!” before adding, “Allegedly.”

Swift’s Return to Studio 8H

Swift’s last on-screen appearance on the show was in October 2023, when she introduced musical guest Ice Spice. She hosted once, in 2009, and served as musical guest in 2009, 2017, 2019 and 2021. She also made cameos during a monologue in 2014 and a “Californians” sketch in 2015, per Variety.

The appearance came as Swift released new music: the expanded “Showgirl” edition with four additional tracks on Sept. 25, and the “Patient Zero” music video, which costars Johnson and Colin Farrell, debuted on Oct. 3. Johnson, hosting SNL for the third time, also marked her birthday, which falls on Oct. 4.
