The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a medical plane with six people aboard that lost contact during a flight from Bermuda to Boston early Saturday off the coast of Nantucket.

The FAA reported losing contact with the Gulfstream G-100 around 1 a.m. local time and issued a Search and Rescue Alert Notice. The Coast Guard deployed air and surface vessels to search the area.

What happened to the missing plane near Nantucket

The Gulfstream G-100 was registered to Latitude Air Ambulance. The Canadian-registered air ambulance carried four crew members and two passengers when it departed Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport overnight, according to Skyport, the airport’s operator.

Flight-tracking data from FlightAware showed the jet took off at about 11:40 p.m. ET Friday and disappeared from tracking roughly one hour and 45 minutes later, after dropping from about 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet.

The plane had been scheduled to land at Boston’s Logan International Airport around 1:30 a.m. local time.

What it means for the six people aboard

Neither the Coast Guard nor the FAA has released the identities of the four crew members or two passengers who were on the flight. No information about their condition has been confirmed as of Saturday night, and officials have not speculated publicly on what caused the aircraft to lose contact or go down.

The Coast Guard Northeast District has led the search and rescue response, coordinating crews in the air and on the water off Nantucket since the alert went out Saturday morning, the agency said.

What’s next

The Coast Guard Northeast District is continuing the search and rescue operation off the coast of Nantucket. The identities of the six people aboard have not been released.
