A new Jurassic World sequel director may be close. J.A. Bayona is the frontrunner to direct the follow-up to “Jurassic World Rebirth,” The Hollywood Reporter reported, after Gareth Edwards left the project over creative differences.
Jurassic World Sequel Director: Why Bayona Leads
Bayona already knows the franchise. The Spanish filmmaker directed “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in 2018. TheWrap said TheInSneider first reported his emergence as the leading candidate, and that Universal declined to comment.
Edwards, who had signed on to direct, exited over creative differences. David Koepp has completed a rewrite of the script, and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are expected to return, according to TheWrap.
The Box-Office Case for Another Sequel
“Jurassic World Rebirth” earned about $870 million worldwide after its 2025 release. The global haul explains why Universal has kept the franchise moving.
Bayona’s Résumé Beyond Dinosaurs
Bayona directed the first two episodes of Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” and the 2012 drama “The Impossible,” which starred Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland. For Netflix, he made “Society of the Snow,” about the 1972 plane crash in the Andes.
What Happens Next
No Jurassic World sequel director has been officially named, and there is no timeline for formal talks. Johansson fans can read about her role in Brad Bird’s animated “Ray Gunn,” and Ali’s next project is covered in our report on HBO’s “Task” Season 2.
