About The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is the film franchise adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, most famously through Peter Jackson's acclaimed early-2000s trilogy produced by New Line Cinema. The franchise later expanded with Jackson's Hobbit trilogy and, more recently, Amazon's television series The Rings of Power, which explores an earlier era of Middle-earth's history.

Jackson's original trilogy is widely regarded as a landmark achievement in fantasy filmmaking, known for its practical and digital effects work, New Zealand filming locations, and sweeping scale, culminating in The Return of the King's sweep of the Academy Awards.

Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels by director Peter Jackson, the original trilogy (2001-2003) was filmed back-to-back in New Zealand, which has since marketed itself heavily around the production. The Return of the King (2003) won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, tying the record for most Oscar wins by a single film and becoming the only fantasy film to win Best Picture. Jackson later directed a second trilogy, The Hobbit (2012-2014), adapting Tolkien's earlier, shorter novel.
