Holiday travelers survey: Price vs loyalty 2026

A holiday travelers survey from The Points Guy and YouGov finds that price, not loyalty, drives booking decisions. Nearly half (48%) of respondents say...

Loyalty programs are a lot like gym memberships. You carry the card like a badge of honor, then a cheaper option shows up and you ghost the whole thing. That tension is driving the conversation around holiday travelers this year, and the latest numbers make it hard to ignore.

What the Latest Travel Data Says About Holiday Travelers

Deloitte’s 2026 summer travel survey isn’t a holiday study, so think of it as a preview, not a prophecy. It’s a loud preview, though. Only 45% of Americans planned a paid lodging vacation, the lowest share in six years, and affordability sat near the top of the reasons people stayed home. Nobody’s shocked. Everything costs more, and the vacation fund always gets hit first.

Here’s the twist. The people who did travel skew wealthier. Households earning $100,000 or more made up 55% of the traveling public, up from 50% last year. So the crowd at the gate is getting richer while everyone else watches from the couch. If that pattern follows us into winter, holiday travelers could start looking less like a general admission line and more like a members-only club.

Why Price Still Rules the Holiday Travel Debate

When money’s tight, the cheapest fare gets the loudest vote. A tier status that took years to earn feels abstract next to a few hundred dollars saved for the whole family. That isn’t disloyalty. It’s math, and math doesn’t care about your platinum card.

Still, the survey shows people aren’t giving up on travel entirely. About 24% planned to increase their budgets for their marquee trip, up from 19% in 2025. Spend less overall, then splurge on the one trip that actually matters. Honestly, relatable.

Where Loyalty Still Wins for Holiday Travelers

Loyalty isn’t dead, just pickier. Free checked bags, priority rebooking, and a human voice on the phone when your flight dies on December 23rd are worth real money. For higher-income travelers paying for comfort, those perks matter even more, because they’d like the comfort to actually show up. A status badge in a snowstorm is basically a cheat code.

Most people run a quiet gut check:

  • Is the price gap big enough to justify switching?
  • Do my points or status expire soon?
  • Will I be stuck if something goes wrong?

Small savings, and loyalty wins. Huge savings, and the rewards card goes back in the wallet without a word. Less love story, more polite breakup.

What Brands Keep Getting Wrong About Holiday Travelers

Companies love the word “delight.” Meanwhile, most people want fair prices, fewer fees, and points that don’t evaporate overnight. Hidden charges turn a loyal customer into a social media screenshot faster than any confetti email can fix. Brands that treat rewards like a real relationship keep their regulars. Brands that treat them like a gimmick lose to whoever has the lowest number on the screen.

Smart Tips for Holiday Travelers on a Budget

You don’t have to pick a side. A few habits help:

  • Book early, because holiday fares rarely get friendlier as the date approaches.
  • Compare the total cost, including bags and seat fees, not just the ticket price.
  • Spend points on pricey peak dates and cash on the cheaper ones.
  • Set fare alerts, then ask your loyalty program whether it can match.

Annoying? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.

One More Insight for the Road

Price wins the loud arguments, while loyalty wins the stressful moments. Smart travelers treat both as tools, not religions. And if a brand wants your devotion this season, it should probably earn it before the snow starts falling.
