George Fenton dies at 76: A sad loss, a powerful legacy

George Fenton dies at 76 after a career spanning Oscar-nominated film scores, BBC nature documentaries and familiar television news themes.

George Fenton, the British composer whose work ranged from “Gandhi” to “The Blue Planet,” died Oct. 5 at 76. His family described the death as unexpected, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A cause was not announced.

George Fenton’s film and television legacy

Fenton earned five Oscar nominations: four for scores, including “Cry Freedom,” “Dangerous Liaisons” and “The Fisher King,” and another for the song “Cry Freedom.” He also won two Emmys.

His film work included “Groundhog Day,” “You’ve Got Mail” and “Hitch.” He worked across genres and with directors including Ken Loach, scoring Loach’s “The Old Oak” in 2023.

For television music, his credits included “The Trials of Life,” “Life in the Freezer,” “The Blue Planet” and “Planet Earth.”

Family remembers the composer

His family’s statement named his wife, Amanda; his ex-wife, Jane; children Gemma, Grace and Bridget; and six grandchildren among those who survive him.
