NBC has fired Gail Lerner as showrunner of its upcoming sitcom Newlyweds, removing the co-creator from the project less than two weeks before the show’s Oct. 23 premiere, according to Deadline. Lerner announced the move herself on Instagram, telling followers, “The reason I’ve been given is ‘creative differences.'”

Newlyweds stars Tèa Leoni and Tim Daly as a later-in-life couple navigating marriage after a whirlwind courtship, with Jamie Lee Curtis also in the cast. Lerner and Curtis co-created the series together, and both are credited as executive producers alongside Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, Scott Schwartz and Lionsgate Television. Leoni also serves as a producer on the show. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces the series for NBC.

The Main Development

Lerner’s exit comes in the middle of production on Newlyweds’ 13-episode first season. The show was scheduled to begin filming its eighth episode on the same day Lerner announced her firing, according to Deadline. NBC and Universal Television plan to use a pre-scheduled hiatus in production to search for a replacement showrunner, the outlet reported.

Lerner said she personally oversaw the first six episodes of the series before her departure. “The first six episodes were made under my leadership, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she wrote on Instagram. She also described her time on the show in personal terms, writing, “I’m so sad to be separated from the most joyous TV experience of my life. The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled.”

What It Means For The Premiere

The Gail Lerner fired Newlyweds showrunner news does not change the show’s scheduled premiere date. NBC is still set to debut the sitcom on Oct. 23, with the first six episodes reflecting Lerner’s creative direction regardless of the leadership change behind the scenes.

No statement from NBC or Universal Television addressing the firing or the reasoning behind it has been made public beyond the “creative differences” characterization Lerner attributed to the network. Tèa Leoni, Tim Daly and Jamie Lee Curtis have not commented on Lerner’s departure, and no new showrunner or announcement timeline has been confirmed.

Background And Context

Lerner has described Newlyweds as a long-gestating project. She said Curtis first brought her the concept during the pandemic. “Jamie brought me this idea during the pandemic, so we’ve been really generating it for a very long time,” Lerner said. “NBC called literally in November of 2025 and said, ‘Hey, let’s do that show,’ and we were off to the races.”

Despite the sudden leadership shakeup, Lerner expressed confidence in the show’s prospects. “No one knows what’s going to happen in our meshuganah business, but I predict this show’s gonna be a barn burner,” she said.

What’s Next

NBC and Universal Television are expected to use the show’s planned hiatus to identify a new showrunner before production resumes. The network has not announced who will take over or when that decision will be made. Newlyweds remains on track to premiere on NBC on Oct. 23, according to Deadline.
