FBI season 9: 3 dangerous twists test a powerful partnership

FBI season 9 leaves OA undercover as Zeeko Zaki and showrunner Mike Weiss explain three threats to his mission and partnership with Maggie.

FBI season 9 puts OA’s undercover assignment ahead of his reunion with Maggie Bell. Zeeko Zaki says the longer his character stays inside Anna Vorpe’s strike team, the harder it becomes to get out safely. The Oct. 5 premiere leaves that operation unfinished.

This story contains spoilers for the season premiere of “FBI.”

FBI season 9 keeps OA inside the strike team

OA has spent three months undercover after his apparent firing. In Zaki’s TVLine interview, the actor describes an agent who misses his regular work but sees the mission becoming increasingly dangerous.

The premiere brings that conflict into focus when the strike team abducts and tortures Cameron Koleo over a suspected leak. OA objects to its methods. Solving the immediate threat does not finish his assignment: Isobel still needs to identify whoever is protecting Anna before the operation can end.

Maggie’s two partnerships face a test

Maggie helps preserve OA’s cover by having him punch her during their encounter. Their trust survives that moment, but Zaki told TVLine the partners will not always agree this season.

Meanwhile, Maggie is working with Isaiah, played by Roland Buck III. He is ADIC Lawrence Green’s nephew and suspects she has withheld the truth about OA. Showrunner Mike Weiss told TV Insider in a Sept. 30 preview that Isaiah is a capable agent. His family connection makes sharing the undercover plan more complicated. OA, Maggie and Isobel arranged the operation together, leaving Green unaware that the firing was part of their plan.

Returning will not erase the assignment

Weiss said OA will return changed by his experiences. Maggie, Scola and Eva will have to help him readjust, with no certainty that he can become exactly the agent he was before.
