The End of Abyss patch arrived on Oct. 2, one day after the metroidvania launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Epic Games Store. Developer Section 9 Interactive used the update to fix the game’s inaccurate map, one of the most disruptive problems of launch week, according to GameSpot.
End of Abyss Patch Details: The Map Fix
GameSpot reviewer Mark Delaney said the map sometimes showed a door as locked after he had already unlocked it. It also failed to flag when he had found the key for a particular door. In a game built around exploration and backtracking, bad map information can send players the wrong way or leave them hunting for doors they have already opened. GameSpot said the patch fixes most of those complaints.
Why does the End of Abyss patch’s map fix matter so much? Metroidvania games are built on interconnected spaces that players revisit as they unlock new abilities and keys, a structure popularized by series such as Metroid and Castlevania. The map is the player’s main record of where they have been and what is still blocked. When it reports the wrong door status, the whole loop of exploring, noting a barrier and returning later starts to break down, which is why the map problem stood out so sharply in early reviews of the game.
The timing of the End of Abyss patch mattered for coverage, too. Delaney’s review ran two days before the patch article, and he wrote that the fix came too late for his review but early enough that most future players will not run into the same map trouble.
What Players Reported Before the Patch
Game Informer gave End of Abyss an 8 out of 10 in its review while describing several technical problems. The reviewer reported getting stuck in walls, falling out of bounds, running into invisible barriers and facing doors that would not open until the game was closed and reloaded. Map errors that marked unlocked doors as locked were part of the list as well.
Game Informer also noted that the game saves frequently when players heal, so restarting after a glitch does not cost much progress. The outlet said multiple patches arrived during its review period and resolved some of the issues. Despite the bugs, the reviewer wrote that they loved exploring the game’s cold, industrial hallways.
Should You Update End of Abyss?
Yes. Anyone who bought the game at launch should install the End of Abyss patch right away, since accurate maps matter most in a game about long treks through the same facility. Players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and the Epic Games Store can check their platform’s update manager to confirm they have the latest version.
The reports we reviewed on the End of Abyss patch do not say whether the collision, invisible-wall and door-prompt problems from the Game Informer review have been addressed, and they do not include a timeline for future patches. Players who still hit those bugs should reload from the most recent save and watch for patch notes from Section 9.
