The Alison Hammond hospital scare ended with good news Saturday. The This Morning host said she is home and “feeling so much better” after checks on her heart, lungs and blood came back clear, E! News reported. Hammond said that meant she had a panic attack on live TV.
What happened on This Morning
During the Friday, Oct. 2, episode, Hammond was taking a phone-in segment with veterinarian Dr. Scott Miller alongside co-host Dermot O’Leary when she rushed off camera, E! News reported. O’Leary finished the segment alone.
After a commercial break, O’Leary told viewers Hammond was “a little unwell” and had “had to duck out.” As the show went on, he said he would present the rest of it himself. Hammond, 51, has been a familiar face on the ITV daytime program for years.
Alison Hammond hospital update: what she said
Hours later, Hammond posted an Instagram Story from a hospital bed, the first Alison Hammond hospital update fans saw. She said she was “fine” but getting her “little ticker checked out,” and that she was having “a little bit of a palpitation.” She said she hoped it had been a panic attack and nothing else, and she thanked the medical staff caring for her.
After the Alison Hammond hospital visit, she shared a second video Saturday and thanked the National Health Service staff who checked her heart, lungs and bloods. “It’s all clear,” she said, adding that she had “a massive panic attack on live TV.” She said she is new to panic attacks and wants to learn more. She also thanked her This Morning colleagues, including O’Leary.
What heart palpitations can mean
The National Health Service in the U.K. describes palpitations as a noticeably unusual heartbeat, often felt as racing, fluttering or irregular beats in the chest, neck or throat. Common triggers include stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, caffeine, alcohol and some medications. Less often, they point to a condition such as a thyroid problem or a heart rhythm disorder.
The NHS says people should see a doctor if palpitations last longer than a few minutes or keep coming back, and call 999 if they come with chest pain, shortness of breath or fainting. Many cases need no treatment, and doctors may use an electrocardiogram, or ECG, to look at the heart’s rhythm.
