5 Centimeters Per Second

GKIDS announced Thursday that it will bring the live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters per Second to North American theaters on Oct. 23, according to Anime News Network.

5 Centimeters Per Second Release Date And Platforms

  • Date: Oct. 23, 2026
  • Region: North American theaters
  • Distributor: GKIDS
  • Format: Live-action theatrical release

GKIDS will reveal details about a home video release later this year.

What We Know About The Film

Yoshiyuki Okuyama directed the live-action adaptation, with Ayako Suzuki writing the screenplay. Ayatake Ezaki composed the score, and Kenshi Yonezu performs the theme song “1991.”

The film is based on Shinkai’s animated 5 Centimeters per Second, which opened in Japan in 2007.

Why It Matters

The film opened in Japan in October 2025 and ranked at number two in its opening weekend. It sold 278,000 tickets and earned 420 million yen (about US$2.78 million) in its first three days.

Those opening numbers show the film found an audience in Japan. North American fans will now get a theatrical version of the story that has been known primarily through the 2007 anime.

What’s Next

Moviegoers can see the film in North American theaters starting Oct. 23. GKIDS will announce home video release details later this year.
