Jessica Biel on Son Silas’s Reaction to Matchbox Set

Jessica Biel says her son Silas, 11, had a front-row seat to the chaos of a Hollywood action set while visiting the production of Matchbox: The Movie, and she opened up about how he processed watching a fight scene unfold in real time. Biel shared the account while promoting the film, which features Silas in a brief cameo and hit Apple TV on Oct. 9.

Biel Describes The Scene That Caught Silas Off Guard

Biel brought both of her sons, Silas and 6-year-old Phineas, to the set to meet star John Cena. What they witnessed included staged fight sequences, among them a moment where an actor took a punch and dropped to the ground.

“I feel like their brains implode whenever they come to set, especially a set like this, where there’s a hero of theirs that they’re meeting. There’s cool action sequences, there’s fight sequences,” Biel said.

The intensity of the choreography sparked a mix of reactions between her two boys, with the younger child struggling to separate fiction from reality.

A Tale Of Two Reactions

Biel explained that Silas, older and more familiar with how movies are made, grasped that the violence was staged for the camera. Phineas had a harder time with it.

“He was like, ‘Is this real? Is this not real? John just got punched and he fell on the ground.’ It’s just a lot of confusion.

My 11-year-old is like, ‘I know what this is,’ but the 6-year-old is still like, ‘What’s happening here? Cannot compute,’” Biel said.

The quote captures a split that many parents on movie sets might recognize: one child treating the chaos as a backstage lesson in filmmaking, the other genuinely unsettled by what looked like real harm.

Silas’s Own Moment In The Movie

The set visit was not Silas’s only connection to the project. He makes a brief on-screen appearance at the very end of the film, marking what Biel described as his acting debut.

“He plays a small part in the movie at the very end, which is really cute,” she said.

Biel also touched on where her son’s interests currently lie, noting that acting is not necessarily his main pursuit. “He’s a DJ, so he’s kind of interested in both lanes,” she said, adding that she and her family are not pushing him toward one path. “We’re just kind of letting him take his time, and see what happens and what he really gets interested in,” Biel said.

What’s Next For Matchbox: The Movie

Matchbox: The Movie premiered on Oct. 5 and became available to stream on Apple TV on Oct. 9. Biel’s comments came as part of the press rollout surrounding the film’s release, with Cena starring alongside her in the project that gave Silas his first taste of life in front of the camera.
