Neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo, who died on October 14, 2025, continues to make a major impact on the music world. Following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, the 51-year-old singer has been mourned by the global music community, with an outpouring of tributes from multiple prominent artists.

The Richmond, Virginia native also has three children, including a son, Michael Archer II, with fellow prolific R&B singer Angie Stone. Stone died in a tour bus accident in March 2025. The loss of both parents within a few months, has understandably been a profound tragedy for their son.

Stars Pay Homage to the Architect of Neo-Soul

Beyoncé paid tribute on her website, calling D’Angelo the “inimitable” pioneer of neo-soul who “changed and transformed rhythm & blues forever”. She also expressed gratitude for his music, voice, piano proficiency, and artistry.

Lauryn Hill shared a heartfelt message, regretting not having more time with him. She also described his talent as “not of this world,” noting he inspired and even intimidated others with his genius.

Tyler, The Creator recalled buying D’Angelo’s album Voodoo on his ninth birthday, calling him a “savant” and a “true alien,” and stating his music shaped his own musical DNA.

Jamie Foxx reflected on being captivated by D’Angelo’s music and live performances, describing his voice as “silky and flawless”. He then expressed deep sorrow at his passing.

Doja Cat and Missy Elliott also shared tributes, with Doja Cat calling him a “true voice of soul” and Missy Elliott sending prayers to his son, who also lost his mother in a car crash earlier in the year.

D’Angelo’s family confirmed his passing, describing him as a “shining star” whose legacy of “extraordinarily moving music” will endure.

D’Angelo’s Legacy Will Eternally Live On

Born Michael Eugene Archer, D’Angelo was a four-time Grammy Award winner. A crucial figure in the development of neo-soul, which blends classic R&B with hip-hop, funk, and jazz influences, he became a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. His songs, “Brown Sugar,” “Lady”, and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” remain popular R&B staples, while his albums, Brown Sugar, Voodoo and Black Messiah remain foundational in modern R&B.
