Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotion. We’re continuing our series with Solomon in Proverbs 4. He remembers the guidance, teachings, and counsel he received from his father, David. His father ensured his upbringing was filled with God’s foundational truths. In verse 4, he remembers David’s words:
4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
In today’s daily devotion, rejoice if your father or mentor taught you truth and led you in God’s ways.
He Taught Me
Solomon acknowledges that David taught him as a child. Some children receive teaching that they don’t adhere to; however, Solomon listened to David’s instructions and gained much wisdom from them. History lists Solomon as David’s tenth son. He came from a long line of older brothers, but God chose Solomon to replace David on the throne.
David knew Solomon’s destiny, and he prepared him to one day rule the kingdom. Parents must understand their children’s gifts and capabilities to guide them properly into their calling or purpose in life. In this daily devotion, be thankful for the parent or mentor who guided you in the right direction.
He Said Unto Me
David appears to have been a hands-on father to Solomon, maintaining a close relationship with him throughout his formative years. Solomon recalls his father’s instruction, which taught him to value wisdom. When Solomon became king, God allowed him to ask for the desire of his heart, and Solomon asked for wisdom to reign over God’s people.
Solomon desired discernment, which is understanding beyond the physical, spiritual understanding, or wisdom. In your daily devotion, acknowledge those who took the time to provide you with words of instruction.
Let Thine Heart
David wasn’t focused only on Solomon’s outward abilities, successes, and accomplishments; he was concerned about his heart. He wanted to ensure his heart was turned in the right direction towards God. David understood that to be a good man, Solomon’s heart must be committed to God. When Solomon dedicated Israel’s first temple, he prayed for God’s attentiveness to HIs people as they sought Him in prayer and repentance. Solomon was taught the importance of having God at the forefront of his life.
In Monday’s daily devotion, give God praise for parents and others who were concerned that your heart was in the right direction.
Retain My Words
In verse 4, Solomon quotes David directly. Solomon knew that not only was it important to listen to his father’s words, but also to retain them. We’ve all had things fly in one ear and out the other. However, this wouldn’t have served Solomon well. He purposed not to let David’s words slip. Throughout Solomon’s life, he valued learning and instruction, and he became known worldwide for his wisdom.
Solomon passes on to his children the benefit of retaining instruction by teaching them the words of his father. In today’s daily devotion, like Solomon, recognize the value of wise words.
Keep My Commandments and Live
David told Solomon to keep his commandments. What were David’s commandments? In 1 Kings 2:2-3, David commanded Solomon to be strong and to obey God’s statutes so that he would prosper. Thank God in today’s daily devotion for those who brought you life-giving words of instruction.
Final Word
In Monday’s daily devotion, it’s clear David prepared Solomon for success. David had wanted to build God’s temple, but Solomon was chosen instead, and David rejoiced in that. David advised him on how to construct it. Speaking to his own children, Solomon honors David as the father who taught him words of life.
