Gas-Powered Macan Returns 2028: Porsche’s Shocking Reveal

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters confirmed a gas-powered Macan returns in 2028 alongside the electric model, and the 911 will remain gas-only forever.

A gas-powered Macan will return in 2028 alongside the electric version, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters said, and the 911 will stay combustion-only. Leiters laid out the plan in his first interview with international media since taking the job in January, according to Investing.com.

Why the gas-powered Macan is coming back

Leiters pushed back on the view that he is turning Porsche away from electric vehicles. “I think that’s unfair,” he said. He said Porsche has to “recover” its petrol strategy and expects a “very balanced offer” for customers once the gas-powered Macan arrives.

The 911 will not get a fully electric version. A battery-electric 718 sports car remains in development.

The numbers behind the shift

Electric Macan sales fell 40% year over year in the first half of 2026, while deliveries in China dropped 32%, Investing.com reported. Porsche’s operating margin fell to 1.1% last year from 18% in 2023, the outlet said.

Leiters also said fair rules would help. “If we have an even playing field, we don’t have to fear any competition,” he said.

Porsche cost cuts and what’s next

Porsche has agreed to cut 9,000 jobs by 2035. It has shut its electric-bike, battery and software units and raised about €1 billion by selling stakes in Bugatti Rimac and the Rimac Group.

In a Sept. 21 memo seen by Reuters, Leiters said there were no plans to cut an additional 4,000 jobs beyond the restructuring plan approved by Porsche’s supervisory board, TimesLIVE reported.
