Holy Leaks, Batman! Steam Deck 2 Boogaloo?

2 Steam Decks on a Wooden Table

While this could be a leaker’s attempt at an April Fools’ joke a little early, it would seem on March 30, 2026, a discussion was started regarding rumored specifications on the PlayStation Portable handheld under the name Canis, and whether or not it matches up with Nintendo Switch 2 and the Xbox Series S. Amid speculation, users brought up the Steam Deck 2 with one user saying it was slated for a 2028 release.

How Did The Steam Deck 2 Get Mentioned?

On a forum gaming board, NeoGAF, a now-banned user, nial, reached out asking about rumors circulating about the PlayStation Portable Handheld from Sony, the PlayStation Canis (PS6 Handheld). Somehow, the conversation was derailed from discussing the leaked handheld by user Jesb, asking if the Steam Deck 2 would be ready when the PS6 Handheld releases, stating they are more interested in the newest iteration than other handhelds. While all of this is largely gossip and rumor, someone by the name of KeplerL2 replied that no, the Steam Deck 2 will not be ready by the time the PS6 Handheld releases.

As the board conversation progressed, more users had inquiries into KeplerL2’s untapped knowledge of Steam Deck 2’s possible release, with probing requests for more details on whether Valve saw a 2029 release or later. The response was what kicked up a fuss as KeplerL2 said Valve’s target goal was 2028, noting the shortage of RAM (random access memory) and NAND (negative-AND, non-volatile flash memory retaining data without power, typical in SSDs, USB drives, and smartphones) could cause delays.

An unexpected but possibly good note of news, though, they mention Valve doesn’t have a semi-custom SoC (System on a Chip) architecture. While Xbox is looking at raw performance in a dual-chiplet design, PS6 is targeting efficiency and a high-speed monolithic design. These two approaches differ from Valve’s performance-per-watt optimization. It would seem KeplerL2 is quite the prolific leaker regarding the tech, as all sources seem to point directly back at them.

But What Does This Mean For The Steam Deck 2?

If the Steam Deck 2 does end up delayed, it could result in better specifications, theorizes KeplerL2. Vice acknowledged KeplerL2’s contribution to the conversation but said the delay might be harsh on Valve fangirls waiting for the new Steam Deck 2. There are some potential caveats we haven’t looked at that could be a major upside for the handheld in the long run. Without the semi-custom SoC, this may give Valve some flexibility to work with, unlike most hardware being developed, which is locked in because of manufacturing contracts.

Vice expounded on KeplerL2’s statement about the lack of semi-custom SoCs, noting that if true, Steam Deck 2 could end up with higher-end components and become the most powerful handheld on the market. According to Vice, KeplerL2 is a widely known and reliable leaker in the hardware industry, but everything so far has been speculative. Without any announcements from Valve themselves, nothing is set in stone. This means the 2028 date could be a set-in-stone release window, but that users looking for the next console may very well be waiting for 2029 for the Steam Deck 2 to become available.

Looking To The Future Amid Speculation And Rumors

While the world faces RAM shortages amid mega AI datacenters being built across the globe, chip shortages causing companies to use lower-grade tech, and Valve’s own problems with getting their next-generation lineup of the Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame to see a release date, any and all rumors should probably be taken with a grain of salt and a bit of whimsy at the idea without serious consideration. The idea might be exhilarating for those who got the Steam Deck at release in 2022 or the OLED model from 2023. Sadly, reality and the real world don’t bend to the hopes and dreams of tech fans.

Here’s hoping Steam makes an official announcement in the coming days!
