Katie Leung In The Spotlight – Looking To The Future While Remembering The Past

Katie Leung as Cho Chang in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Yule Ball entrance

Our first introduction to Katie Leung came in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” as fans of the series followed a young Harry into his fourth year at Hogwarts. Though avid readers of the book series would remember, her character Cho Chang was meant to be in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” where they first meet. Leung has had quite the transformation, though, from her youth to how she portrays Lady Araminta in the 4th season of “Bridgerton,” who comes across as a completely different person.

From Spotlight To Behind A Camera

Leung’s first casting in the series as a teen was after her father had found an advert for the casting call. When she was questioned about a memoryfrom her involvement, she was quoted as saying,

“It was a really nice moment because my parents hadn’t seen each other for a long, long time and both of them accompanied me to the first audition. It was just a really nice feeling to stand in the queue for however many hours and, at that point, it wasn’t about getting the part.”

At this time in Leung’s life when she was questioned, she was working as a student of photography in April of 2011. The interview process revealed a more down-to-earth and relaxed, albeit chatty, person than a typical popular star. At the time, she referred to herself as rather timid or an introvert. She was keen to share photos she had taken, ranging from muted scenes like empty parking lots to images that attempted to capture the wind. She admits to being nosy in an attempt to get candid shots, instead of posed work, using natural light in her work.

The intrigue into photography was initially spurred when she was traveling to promote the films. The desire to capture life, or as she put it, ageing and death, as it was a subject she felt was a big deal to her, even at the age of 23.

Back To The Silver Screen

It was announced in 2024 that “Bridgerton,” streaming on Netflix, had found an exceptional fairy tale role, the perfect witch. Enter in Lady Araminta, played by our very own Leung, a seemingly evil antagonist. She is accompanied by two other arrivals, Michelle Mao and Isabella Wei, playing the roles of her daughters Rosamund and Posy, respectively. Her character is described as twice-widowed, fiercely seeking to debut her marriage-aged daughters with her eyes set on the series’ eligible Benedict, much to Sophie’s dismay.

Season 4, which is adapted from Julia Quinn’s novel “An Offer from a Gentleman,” has Cinderella-inspired storytelling where Benedict falls in love at his mother’s masquerade ball with a mysteriously masked woman. While inspired by Cinderella, it is a unique reality-based romance, a twist on the typical fairy tale story.

Leung and Wei had an interview last month. It highlighted the drastic differences between her formative experience in “Harry Potter” and how it helped her move toward a unique expression of herself as she came aboard to join the television series. Wei and Leung open up about their characters, their interactions, and explore their characters’ evolution in future seasons.

“Now I feel like I know who I am. I know what I want. I know my boundaries, all these kinds of things and I can protect myself through just like knowing myself better and you know, I’ve come into Bridgerton like just having a really healthy focus on the workd and making great connections with the people that are on the same. So glad I’m here. I would not want to go back to like, that time. Not because you know, I had a bad time or anything, but its just really nice when you know who you are. I’m still figuring that out, but I’m a bit closer.”
