Doctor Who is set to bring back two key stars and more!! What’s The Major Speculation? Well, with the regeneration of Ncuti Gatwa’s version of the Doctor into Billie Piper, there’s no time to bring back some more familiar faces to the Whoniverse of shows, but not to the main show. Recently, it was announced that Karen Gillian, who played Amy Pond, and Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams, are returning to celebrate the show in a special episode of ‘Doctor Who: Unleashed for its 20th anniversary.

This episode will also include the likes of David Tennant, Billie Piper, Jodie Whittaker, Ncuti Gatwa, Pearl Mackie, Varada Sethu, and Mandip Gill, along with show runners Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat, and Chris Chibnall.

The Ponds are Unleashed

Both Gillian and Darvill made their debut as Amy and Rory back in 2011 when Moffat took over as show-runner, along with Matt Smith starting his run as the 11th Doctor.  Gillian is no stranger to the Whoniverse, though, as she appeared in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii” during David Tennant’s run as the Doctor, playing one of the sisters of the Sibylle Sisterhood.

When these characters were introduced, it was a change as the Doctor had never really had a married couple as his companions, let alone the married couple that would become his in-laws, marrying River Song, of course. They had an interesting dynamic, and audiences were heartbroken when the Ponds left the Doctor and his big blue box.

What to Expect from Doctor Who Unleashed

The journey into the world of Who is being led by presenter Steffan Powell, who has hosted the show since 2023. Not only will we be catching up with old friends, but we will be shown behind-the-scenes secrets and designs from former production designer Edward Thomas and costume designer Ray Holman. If you’re a true Whovian, then you will love seeing how everything is made and dive deep into what makes a good episode of this series. It will be a treat to see Doctors, companions, and show runners alike return to celebrate 20 years of New Who and to possibly talk about the future of the series.

Doctor Who: Unleashed is set to air on June 7th on the BBC iPlayer and later on air on BBC One Wales and BBC Three for UK viewers. You can also watch on YouTube when the Doctor Who YouTube channel posts.
